The Tanzania e-Visa requirements are consistent across nationalities: a valid passport (6+ months validity), a passport-style photo, return ticket, accommodation proof, and payment of the $50 USD government fee. This guide covers every requirement in detail โ who is eligible, what documents to prepare, and what Tanzania immigration expects at the border.
Who Is Eligible for Tanzania e-Visa?
The Tanzania e-Visa is available to nationals of most countries in the world โ over 160 nationalities. Tanzania uses an inclusive approach: if your country is not on the visa-exempt list and not specifically restricted, you are eligible to apply for an e-Visa.
Countries Exempt from Tanzania Visa (No Visa Required)
A small number of nationalities enter Tanzania without any visa:
| Country | Visa Status |
|---|---|
| Kenya | Visa-free |
| Uganda | Visa-free |
| Rwanda | Visa-free |
| Burundi | Visa-free |
| South Sudan | Visa-free |
| Comoros | Visa-free |
| Mauritius | Visa-free |
| Seychelles | Visa-free |
A few additional African states have bilateral agreements โ check the Tanzania visa exempt countries guide for the full list.
Countries Eligible for Tanzania e-Visa
All other countries โ including United States, United Kingdom, European Union member states, Canada, Australia, India, China, Japan, and most others โ require a visa. For these nationalities, the Tanzania e-Visa is the standard and recommended option. See nationality-specific guides:

| Passport type | Ordinary/regular passport (diplomatic and official passports have separate procedures) |

| Machine readable | Must have a machine-readable zone (MRZ) โ almost all modern passports qualify |
Example: If you plan to leave Tanzania on November 30, 2026, your passport must be valid until at least May 30, 2026.
If your passport expires in less than 6 months, renew it before applying for the e-Visa. A Tanzania e-Visa cannot be transferred to a new passport.

Passport Photo Requirements
The passport-style photograph is one of the most common causes of application delays. Your photo must meet these specifications:
| Specification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Background | White or off-white only |
| Recency | Taken within the last 6 months |
| Format | JPEG (JPG) |
| Minimum size | 300 ร 300 pixels |
| Maximum file size | 2MB |
| Face coverage | Face occupies 70โ80% of the frame |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed |
| Eyes | Open, looking directly at camera |
| Glasses | Not permitted |
| Head coverings | Only permitted for verifiable religious reasons |
| Lighting | Even lighting, no shadows on face or background |
| Digital alterations | None permitted |
Print photos taken at professional passport photo studios or pharmacies work well. Many phone apps (like Passport Photo Maker or similar) can also produce compliant images.
